Impermeability of the garment
This clothing was tested in a shower trial using 60l/sqm/hr of water for 1 hour. This test replicates the average conditions of a rain shower.
The fabric of this jacket is water-repellent, which means water runs off the surface without seeping in. As a result, the fabric does not soak up the water and remains lightweight and breathable. A fabric becomes water repellent by applying a treatment to its outer surface. We have also taped the main seams, those most exposed to the rain.
How to maintain the waterproofing of your jacket over time
In order to maintain good waterproofing over time, the fabric's water repellent properties must be regularly reactivated. We recommend doing this every three washes or after a dozen uses in the rain. The waterproof property can be easily restored by heating the fabric: in a tumble dryer or with a hairdryer for a relatively short period. If you are washing it, it must be thoroughly rinsed.
Waterproof rating expressed in mm or Schmerber
We measure the resistance of a fabric to water pressure expressed in mm of water column (test based on Standard ISO 811). The higher the water pressure, the more waterproof the fabric. A fabric with a waterproof rating of 2000mm is therefore resistant to the pressure exerted by a 2000mm column of water.
Component breathability
To find out whether a fabric is breathable, we test its total evaporative resistance (RET) based on the ISO 11092 standard. The lower the fabric's resistance, the more water vapour generated by physical activity can escape, and the higher the fabric's breathability.
- RET < 9 = extremely breathable fabric
9 < RET < 12 = very breathable fabric
12 < RET < 20 = breathable fabric
RET > 20 = little or no breathability
How to choose your waterproof jacket depending on your activity and your level of exercise?
During a sporting activity, you perspires to varying degrees, depending on the intensity or length of the effort. If the fabric's breathability is not suited to the type of activity/exercise, your perspiration will condense inside the jacket. You feel damp inside: this isn't rain getting through, but condensation from sweat. You therefore need to choose a rain jacket according to your type of physical activity. This jacket is designed for 2-hour hikes at no more than 5km/hr.
A score for comparing products' environmental impact
On a scale from A to E, this jacket scored a C. Our products' environmental impacts are calculated over their entire life cycle. A rating from A to E is given to help you easily identify products with the best environmental performance by comparing and contrasting products of the same type (T-shirts, trousers, backpacks).

Making dyes more eco-friendly
Our teams work to find innovative processes that reduce water consumption or water pollution during the production process. The "dope dye" (bulk dying) process saves up to 60% of water and significantly reduces the amount of CO2 emitted. This means clothing with a longer-lasting colour.
With this particular jacket, we have used this process on the main navy-coloured fabric and the turquoise-coloured lining (to be extended further once we master the technique on other colours).
Making materials more eco-friendly
We take care of our planet to preserve our natural playground for hiking.
Given that, for this jacket, we have only mastered the new dyeing process above for some of the colours, we have opted for a material made entirely of recycled polyester fibres for the other colours (main fabric in turquoise and red and the lining in navy and red). As a result, we have reduced our environmental impact on all the colour versions.
Additional recommended products
We recommend you wear the NH500 Waterproof over-trousers to also protect your lower body. You will then have a comprehensive protection system that is very efficient against the wind and showers.
And, first and foremost: from 2019, we will also start using this more eco-friendly dyeing process on these overtrousers!
